The impact of cancer in a population is mainly assessed by means of:
- mortality (deaths): shows the lethality of the disease
- incidence (new cases): expresses the risk of developing the disease
- survival: shows the natural history of disease and the effectiveness of treatment
This information as a whole is of use when planning activities connected with prevention, healthcare and evaluation, as well as in order to establish top priority research lines, all of which oriented to improve cancer surveillance and control in a population.
